Things to do

Marrick Safari offers you many ways in which you could explore the African Country, with 3000 hectares of unspoiled veldt teaming with wildlife.

When hiking one is not restricted to roads; follow the game paths like the explorers of long ago did when they were discovering the interior of Africa. Arrange for a guided 4x4 game drive, breakfast in the bush or sundowners with spectacular views. Night drives offer an exiting world of nocturnal animals.

Marrick Safari would like to offer you the full experience of nature in their natural surroundings. There is a wide variety of bird life, including birds endemic to the area.

Kimberley, although synonymous with the Big Hole is also famous for its large population of flamingo, which congregate at the Campers Dam, where a new breeding island has been established. Numbers vary between 3000 - 30000 all year round, and one is assured of seeing hundreds of flamingo on every visit to the dam.

Marrick Safari is proud to have a pair of breeding Blue Crane returning annually. Available on request is a bird list compiled by our local ornithologist Mark Anderson.

Marrick Safari is only 10 Km from Kimberley, the historic diamond city of South Africa. Guided tours can be arranged. A visit to the Kimberley Mine Museum, situated on the edge of the Big Hole, the largest man-made excavation in the world is a "gem" not to miss. Other interesting tours can include: a ghost tour, an underground tour of a working diamond mine, a tour of the Battle fields and lots lots more.

A special mention should also be made of the William Humphreys Art Gallery, which presently concentrates on collecting South African works of art and rock engravings. The Duggan Cronin Art Gallery also offers an outstanding collection of some 8 000 photographs of the indigenous people of Southern Africa taken between 1919 and 1939 by Alfred Duggan-Cronin, an Irish mine manager who also happened to be an excellent photographer.

The Wildebeest Kuil Rock Art site, which is the only one of its kind in the world is about 30min drive from Marrick Safari, and is located next to a koppie (hill) which has literally hundreds of well preserved Bushman rock paintings It also has a lovely tea garden to quench your thirst. The Magersfontein Battlefield Museum and the McGregor Museum should also form part of your itinerary.

Why not visit our local casino and try your luck, who knows, maybe you could win yourself a fortune.

KIMBERLEY

The capital city Kimberley is world-renowned as the historic centre of the modern diamond industry. The most centrally situated city in South Africa, Kimberley is a convenient stop-over on most journeys, especially for travellers between Johannesburg, the beautiful Garden Route and Cape Town.

Things to see and do:

The Big Hole
Mined to a depth of 800 m, with a surface area of around 17 hectares, it is the largest hand dug excavation in the world. It yielded 14.5 million carats of diamonds.

Kimberly Mine Museum
Consisting of original as well as carefully reconstructed buildings, this museum has preserved the city's past. The Eureka, the first recorded diamond discovered in South Africa, can be viewed here. Have fun sifting through diamond bearing gravel, looking for your own diamond. Play skittles in the old bowling alley, or stroll through the old buildings which have been reconstructed here.

Working Tram
The only one in Southern Africa. This historic tram runs between the Kimberley City Hall and the Open Mine Museum at regular intervals. A must for visitors of all ages.

Diamond Mine
Take a tour round one of the oldest and deepest working underground diamond mines in the world.

Battlefields
Take a tour to re-live the excitement and tragedy of the Anglo-Boer War.

Galeshewe Cultural Tour

Xun and Xhwe Cultural Art Centre
Learn about the folklore, culture and traditions of the San bushmen.

The Williams Humphreys Art Gallery
Be enthralled by the exquisite artworks on display at South Africa’s only A-rated art museum. One of the most important galleries in the country, the WHAG houses a collection of traditional and contemporary South African graphics, sculptures and paintings. It hosts frequent special exhibitions.

Alexander McGregor Memorial Museum
Situated in Chapel Street in the central business district. The original McGregor Museum was built in 1907 in memory of Alexander McGregor, a former mayor.

The Transport Museum
This has a fine collection of railway memorabilia from the early days of steam locomotion. Kimberley was a main line terminus on the routes to and from Cape Town and the goldfields of the Transvaal.

UPINGTON - Unexpected pleasures..

Nestled on the banks of the Orange River, this is the principal town in the far north. Full of supermarkets and chain stores, it is clearly prosperous. It is a good stopover on the way to South Africa from Namibia, and close to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

Covering almost 1,000,000 hectares, this park is nestled between Botswana and Namibia, with 1,807,000 hectares in Botswana. Its landscape is semi desert which supports bird life, reptiles, small mammals and antelopes, which in turn support a large population of predators such as Kalahari lion, cheetah and leopard. Much of the wildlife is concentrated around the waterholes in the riverbeds or the usually dry Nossob and Auob River that runs through the park.
